The shoulder joint itself is commonly referred to a golf ball on a tee in that the shoulder isn’t really being held in place by the socket but merely resting on top of it. This means that more support is needed and for that we have a cuff of cartilage around it called a labrum. If the shoulder is injured a labral tear commonly occurs. It can be caused by incidents such as a fall onto an outstretched hand or onto the shoulder, a direct blow to the shoulder, lifting heavy objects repeatedly or too suddenly, as well as repeated overhead activity such as throwing a ball. There are two types of labral tears, a SLAP lesion and a Bankart Lesion.

Signs and symptoms:

  • Popping, clicking or catching in the shoulder.
  • Pain with arm movements especially those above head height.
  • Weakness
  • Generalised ache throughout the shoulder.
  • A feeling of instability with certain shoulder movements.
