Torticollis describes a spasming of muscles around the head and neck severely limiting neck movement. The muscles in your neck are very powerful in that they have to support the weight of your head so if damaged, they will go into spasm, causing the feeling of your neck being ‘locked up.’ The exact cause is unknown although patients commonly present after having their head in an unusual position for an extended period of time e.g. twisted neck while sleeping. It can also occur following a trauma e.g. car accident/whiplash.

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Headaches arising from the neck.
  • Inability to move the neck in certain ways without pain.
  • Head tilt to one side.
  • Potential history of recent neck trauma.
  • Severe muscle spasming in the neck.
