The lateral epicondyle is the most prominent part on the outside of the elbow. The purpose of the lateral epicondyle is to serve as an anchor point for muscles that move the wrist and fingers. This can commonly be overloaded during repetitive sports e.g. tennis or occupational activities e.g. using a mouse or a screwdriver. When the muscle tendons are overloaded, there can be slight tearing of the muscle causing swelling and loss of strength, which will in turn cause pain.

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Aching/sharp pain at the elbow (lateral surface).
  • Weakness in grip strength.
  • Pain shooting down the forearm.
  • History of repetitive movements with the elbow/forearm.
  • Pain/stiffness in the elbow in the morning.
  • Swelling of the elbow.
