These conditions all produce localised forefoot pain under the bottom of the toes. Intertarsal neuralgia also known as Mortons Neuroma, is described as the compression of the nerve between the 3rd and 4th metatarsals as a result of scar tissue and excessive movement in the forefoot. Metatarsalgia is a condition that results in bruising/ burning under the base of the metatarsals which is caused by a weak/lost transverse arch ligament in the forefoot. Direct trauma from jumping or landing on toes, running and standing for long periods in high heels can all contribute in developing the above conditions.
Signs and Symptoms:
- Localised forefoot pain which may radiate a burning/shooting pain into the toes.
- Pain increased when wearing tight fitted shoes or intense forefoot running.
- Sharp pain or pins and needles may be felt when forefoot is squeezed together.
- May alter gait when acute and severe.
- Increased tension in the lower leg and feet musculature.
