What it is
Rotator cuff arthropathy is a form of shoulder arthritis that develops when the rotator cuff tendons are torn and cannot stabilise the joint. The humeral head rides upward, the acromion adapts, and the joint surface wears. Pain, weakness, and loss of elevation follow.
Management aims to reduce pain, improve deltoid and scapular function, and restore reliable use of the arm. Reverse total shoulder replacement is an option for severe cases when function remains poor.
What happens when it occurs
Loss of cuff support allows the ball to migrate upward during elevation. The deltoid works harder but with poor leverage. Rebuilding scapular control and deltoid strength improves lift. In advanced cases, surgery changes joint geometry to restore a stable fulcrum.
